Inpatient treatment for trauma and PTSD

Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Trauma occurs when an individual experiences an event that threatens the physical or psychological integrity of themselves or others, either once or multiple times throughout their life. While some individuals can recover from the emotional distress caused by trauma relatively quickly, others may become stuck in their trauma response and develop post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.

Our approach
Medically focused care addresses physical, psychological, and social aspects of recovery. Clients connect to a therapeutic community where they can help each other and where issues such as fear, anger, and shame can be addressed. The program is led by a physician and integrates interdisciplinary expertise through a team of experts, such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, nurses, social workers and other clinicians who have extensive experience in dealing with trauma symptoms.
Trauma and PTSD treatment for adults
By the time individuals reach adulthood, they may have accumulated life experiences that include stressful and traumatic events. Ravenview treatment for adults begins with an assessment of trauma symptoms, including post-traumatic stress. Because we use the strongest evidence-based treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress, individuals are streamed into treatment groups that help them resolve the trauma they have experienced.

Trauma and PTSD treatment for young adults
Trauma is a key experience that influences a young adult’s development in many ways. Unprocessed or unhealed trauma can hinder a young person’s development and their ability to progress and live a meaningful life. Each young adult is assessed for trauma and post-traumatic stress during intake into the My Path Program, and if needed, they receive evidence-based trauma treatment alongside a group of their peers.
Trauma and PTSD treatment for first responders
Many Canadians suffer from trauma and post-traumatic stress, however, frontline workers are twice as likely as the general population. Ravensview’s Guardians Program offers first responders, military personnel, and veterans evidence-based treatment that is uniquely tailored to the needs of this population and their experiences both in and out of uniform. Treatment is delivered in groups composed of their peers so that they can share their unique experiences, which are extremely powerful and an important part of treatment.

What is trauma?

Trauma is caused when someone experiences or witnesses a distressing event that falls outside of the normal realm of experience and appears to threaten the person’s life or physical or mental integrity. These events can include accidents, natural disasters, crimes, abuse, or other violent events, and they provoke a strong emotional reaction which, in some cases, can prevent someone from functioning normally and living their lives fully.
What is PTSD?
Post-traumatic stress disorder can be triggered in response to one or more traumatic events, causing a number of debilitating symptoms that can include flashbacks, nightmares, avoidant behaviour, dissociation, negative and unrealistic thoughts, selective memory loss, and strong negative emotions and core beliefs.

People with post-traumatic stress may also have behavioural concerns, such as violent or angry outbursts, reckless or destructive behaviour and difficulty concentrating or sleeping. A person with post-traumatic stress may not display all of these symptoms, but rather any number or combination of symptoms that are strong enough to cause significant emotional problems or challenges with daily living. Homewood Ravensview offers a number of proven, evidence-based treatments for post-traumatic stress.
